Home Preschool: The Letter F

This is an ever growing place for all things letter F. We used the letter F as inspiration in instances that made sense, but if there wasn’t something that fit naturally, we simply substituted it with something else we wanted to learn about. If you’d like to read an overview of the structure and creation of this home preschool series you can find that here. This post will be jumping right into our resources for this week.

BOOK LIST

(I’ve only listed the books that we’ve read and enjoyed. But within each list you might also notice this arrow ^. I’ve placed that beside the ones that I think make a great addition to a home children’s library based on their exceptional rereadability or reference material.)

ART STUDY

  • Frida Kahlo— We noticed that Frida Kahlo utilized a lot of florals in her art and did a lot of self-portraits. So either of these could be used as an entry point for art inspiration this week. We gathered some flowers from the garden to paint with and create different textures. You could also create a vibrant self-portrait or use the actual flowers to create the art. There’s also a lovely free downloadable coloring page of Frida Kahlo available here, created by Rachel Ignotofsky.

ART PROJECTS

  • “F is for Feathers” Worksheet (Free download for that below.)
  • Make Forest Dough/Putty— I came across this idea through Tinkergarten and we’ve really enjoyed it. You can find their ideas for play here. We made a big batch of our regular homemade play dough. (This recipe from Art Bar is my favorite and hasn’t failed me yet. We just add essential oil and usually leave out the color and glitter.) I personally find play dough so much more captivating to play with when there is lots of it. This one is particularly nice because it’s easy to make, but also lasts a really long time without getting hard or moldy. We’ve been adding lemongrass essential oil to it simply because that’s the one I’ve had on hand. We’ve done lavender and cinnamon in the past as well. But the lemongrass has been a simultaneously relaxing and invigorating scent. We’ve been storing ours in old Chobani containers and then we use a separate one to store all their nature treasures in (moss, lavender, sticks, pinecones, acorns, bark, etc.)
  • Bird Feeder
  • Flower Stamping
  • Footprints
  • Finger Painting

LANGUAGE + LITERACY

  • Frére Jacques
  • Fooba Wooba John
  • Poem: I Sit Beside the Fire and Think by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • Poem: The Flower by Lord Tennyson
  • Poem: Friends by Abbie Farwell Brown

MATHEMATICS + BASIC SKILLS

  • Number Focus: 7 + 8— Each week I’ve just been doing a quick scan of the toys and picking out one to count for our numbers that week. I still get frequent requests for “pick a card” with Cheerios.
  • Brushing Teeth— Obviously we’ve been doing this for awhile. We added it as something to learn with intention. Offering a why behind the importance of brushing our teeth, promoting greater independence in the habit, etc.
  • Emotions: Happy— Making space over one of our snacks for conversation about happiness. (What does happy look like? What does it feel like? When do you feel happy? When do you notice that others are happy? What do you do when you’re happy?)
  • Friendship— Just another intentional conversation about what makes a good friend (i.e. what they do or don’t do). Catch them being a good friend and celebrate that with words of encouragement.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH + SCRIPTURE STUDY

  • Mealtime Prayers
  • “The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”—GALATIANS 5:22-23

WORDS TO INSPIRE CREATIVITY + PLAY
I share this list because I believe in using the resources that you have. Some preschool plans have made me feel like I need to buy very specific resources, which often isn’t necessary. There are so many perfect materials that already exist in our homes for preschool play and creativity and learning. These words are to serve as inspiration for your own art projects or imaginative play.

Below is a one sheet of the activities we used for the week. I prefer the option of printing things out for the week and having them all in one place (worksheets, poems, plans, etc.). You’ll also find the “F” is for Feathers page we did, a blank letter F to fill in if you’d prefer something different, and a large tracing page that can be used with playdough, dry erase markers, or other loose parts. Below that you’ll find a simple printout of the poems for the week. The A-Z Memory Verses post contains a card with Galatians 5:22-23 for this week.
