It seemed appropriate when working our way through the alphabet with home preschool that we would incorporate an intentional letter themed spiritual element. There are endless ways for this to happen, but sometimes it looks like learning a song, sometimes it looks like noticing nature, sometimes it looks like reading a story, sometimes it looks like a question, and sometimes it looks like a memory verse. Each week we’ve been trying to read/recite a memory verse, because I want Biblical truth to be familiar to their minds and hearts as they grow. I want to help them be shaped by kindness and love and grace and patience and peace and compassion. I want them to seek God and truth and I believe early memorization can be a helpful tool for cultivating deep roots.
For me, these cards are less about learning the alphabet and more about making biblical memorization more approachable. I presently benefit from having a plan and a stack of verses ready to memorize, but I can also see as they grow older tailoring a collection of verses more specific to things they may be struggling with. They’ve worked well with our preschool work and at the conclusion of working through the cards, you and your child will have worked through 26 verses together.
Young children have an impressive capacity for memorization. I’m often surprised by how quickly they commit the verses to memory. We review them at snacks and mealtimes and they usually have the majority of the verse down by the end of the week.
With one verse a week, there’s no expectation of it being a long term memory thing. Right now with three year olds that is not my intent, but I love that we’re intentionally meditating on Scripture together consistently in a very simple way.
Rather than share each verse with you week by week, it seemed to make the most sense to offer them as one simple collection. We keep ours on the fridge and that has made it easier for me to remember. That rhythm might not be yours, but I would just recommend keeping them nearby wherever you plan to incorporate them in your rhythm. Download by clicking the link below and enjoy!
